Sorting Parcels by 5-Digit ZIP for USPS Parcel Select DDU Entry
If you inject parcels at USPS delivery units, every load has to be split by delivery unit, and often by 5-digit ZIP Code. A sorter does that split before the truck leaves.
DDU Entry Rules That Drive the Sort
- Entry point: pieces must be entered by the mailer at the postal facility where the carrier delivers the parcels.
- Minimum: each mailing must include at least 50 Parcel Select pieces.
- Separation: if the delivery unit serves more than one 5-digit ZIP Code, pieces must be separated by 5-digit ZIP when unloaded (except optional 5-digit scheme sacks or pallets).
- Containers: no minimum sacking or pallet standards; pieces can be bedloaded, sacked or palletized.
- Marking: each piece must carry a Parcel Select price marking.

Where the sorter fits
Chutes are mapped in software. For DDU injection, map each chute to a delivery unit, or to a 5-digit ZIP where a unit serves several. Parcels leave the sorter already grouped for each truck stop and each ZIP.
The sorter groups parcels. Postage, Parcel Select price markings and USPS documentation stay with your shipping system.
Operations That Inject at Delivery Units
Regional carriers
Carriers that hand off part of their volume to USPS for final delivery in rural or low-density ZIPs.
Consolidators
Operations that combine parcels from several shippers and drop them at delivery units on fixed routes.
Shippers and 3PLs
Warehouses that split outbound parcels by carrier and by delivery unit before pickup.
Pay per Parcel or Buy
Run a SortLease S15 on pay-per-parcel pricing from $0.10 per parcel, with SortLease installing, operating and maintaining it, or buy a system quoted for your configuration.
To size it, divide daily volume by your sort window: 20,000 parcels in 2 hours is 10,000 an hour, so three tiers or lines.
What we need to size it
- Daily parcels and sort window
- Number of delivery units and ZIP Codes
- Parcel size and weight range
- Floor area and clear height
Holiday Prices and Last-Mile Bids
USPS temporary holiday prices run from October 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027, adding $0.40–$2.35 per commercial Parcel Select piece by weight. USPS has also opened its 18,000 delivery units to last-mile bids, with service from Q3 2026 — more direct DDU injection means more sorting by delivery unit and ZIP.
DDU Sorting Questions
Is there a minimum volume for Parcel Select DDU entry?
Yes. A Parcel Select DDU mailing must include at least 50 Parcel Select pieces (USPS DMM 255.4.1.2). There is no minimum per sack or pallet.
Do DDU parcels have to be sorted by 5-digit ZIP Code?
When the delivery unit serves more than one 5-digit ZIP Code, pieces must be separated by 5-digit ZIP when unloaded, unless they are prepared in optional 5-digit scheme sacks or pallets. Check FAST for the ZIP Codes each unit serves.
Does the SortLease S15 print postage or USPS documentation?
No. The sorter groups parcels by delivery unit or ZIP Code. Postage, Parcel Select price markings and USPS documentation stay with your shipping system.
Can one sorter handle DDU injection and other carriers?
Yes. Chutes are mapped in software, so some can go to USPS delivery units and others to UPS, FedEx or regional carriers.
Is SortLease affiliated with USPS?
No. SortLease is an independent U.S. company. USPS rules summarized here come from the Domestic Mail Manual; confirm current requirements with USPS.
